QUILTS ON THE DOUBLE with Judy Hooworth

Explore the possibilities of making two completely different quilts from one set of simple cutting and sewing. You will begin with easy strip piecing then make some diagonal cuts to give you two sets of triangles. After this start, the fun begins as you arrange these triangles to make two quilts. You will see how to create different patterns by arranging the triangles in different ways, and the amazing possibilities than can result. You will enjoy discovering alternative designs to find the ones that work best for your set of fabrics. There are many, many possibilities for each quilt, and the designs work especially well with striped fabrics as all kinds of log cabin style patterns can be made. But wait – there’s more! A third set of left over triangles may be used to make a bonus small quilt. The basis of the quilts is groups of fat quarters or fat eighths. This class can help use up some of your stash!

You will be required to do a bit of preparation at home, so that you will have more time in the Workshop, for the design side of things.

BAG WORKSHOP with Miriam Miller

Take part in this workshop and learn how to create an artistic bag from recycled fabrics and at the same time have lots of fun. All materials supplied. Learn new techniques of hooky and proggy methods and enjoy the end result with an item that is not only useful, but beautiful. A rewarding experience.

DESIGN DRAWING and MACHINE QUILTING with Beth and Trevor Reid

On the first day of the Workshop, you will explore drawing techniques and design ideas that would be suitable for use in contemporary quilting. Trevor will take you through the development of a design, transferring the design onto paper, and then drawing directly onto the fabric, using a variety of mediums such as fabric paints, crayons and pens. On day two, with Beth’s guidance, you will be shown how to enhance, embellish and machine quilt the piece created the day before with Trevor. Or alternatively, you can learn the technique of free motion machine quilting, expand your expertise and learn a number of simple free motion continuous quilting patterns, use your machine as a pen and explore. Beth will pass on tips of the trade that she has learned over the years as a machine quilter.

FLYING IN CIRCLES with Lessa Siegel

Create the illusion of circles with all straight piecing. Flying in Circles is traditional in style, rotary cut and machine pieced. You could use scraps, or just two colours, it is great either way. Requirements will include some pre-cutting so that there will be plenty of sewing time in class. The class project comprises just four blocks but more blocks can be added later to make a bed size quilt. This workshop is suitable for all levels

HEXAGONS with Catherine Butterworth

This Workshop will concentrate on cutting and construction techniques for easy, but oh-so-effective hexagon based quilts. In addition there will be discussions on fabric choices and the importance of tonal values in your quilts. You will be working with Marti Michele Hexagon Template Sets G & H. These sets consist of two different sized hexagons as well as their companion pieces, such as the half hexagon, diamond and equilateral triangle. Although this Workshop will emphasise quick machine construction techniques, hand piecers will also experience the benefits of accurate cutting and the ease to which the special engineered corners on the templates aid in perfect piecing. For small or medium sized prints. The workshop will be broken into three sections:

I SPY QUILTS

This design is the perfect showcase for feature fabrics. Large florals, novelties, toiles, embroideries and appliqués – there are endless possibilities.

HEXAGON STARS

Understanding the relationship of companion pieces and how they work together to construct various hexagon star patterns. In addition you will be working with Marti Michele’s multi-sized 60 degree Equilateral Triangle Ruler for even more design possibilities

SIMPLIFIED SEVEN SISTERS

You will love how easily and accurately the pieces go together on this more advanced block. There are no set in seams and blocks can be multi layered cut for added speed. Tips on fussy cutting larger prints will be discussed and yes – you can cut the traditional Seven Sisters Block, it just won’t be as quick to stitch. Rulers will be available for purchase at the Workshop

ARABESQUE with Michele Hill

Michele’s inspiration in designing this lovely quilt, came from the ornamental decorative panels of the 15th and 16th centuries. While there are thirteen blocks in the quilt, you will probably finish one or two at the Workshop. However, patterns for the complete quilt will be provided. Michele will spend time with you, discussing and demonstrating various machine appliqué and quilting techniques. The finished quilt size is approximately 60cm square, but sashings and borders can be added to make a larger quilt.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT with Gail Simpson

Gail has designed a lightweight carry on, or overnight bag, with zippered closing. Change the dimension and you could make a mat and ruler bag. You will also make a matching bag with multiple zippered compartments. The handle is adjustable and the bag can be carried either on your shoulder, or slung across your body. Or you can shorten the handle to regular handbag length. Then there are all the other things you can make with the leftovers – coin purse, camera cover, mobile phone pouch which can be attached to the handle of your bag, glasses case, rotary cutter pouch. Most important, you get to learn about zippers.  A kit of fittings, etc. will be available for purchase in the Workshop.
